PC-BASIC is a free, open-source GW-BASIC interpreter created by Rob Hagemans. It is designed to faithfully reproduce the behavior of classic GW-BASIC, BASICA, and PCjr Cartridge BASIC, allowing vintage BASIC programs to run unmodified on modern computers. PC-BASIC works across platforms, including Windows, macOS, and Linux, and emulates the look, timing, and quirks of 1980s IBM PC BASIC environments.
The interpreter supports original text and graphics behavior, PC speaker-style sound, and common file and device I/O patterns used by legacy software. It can load and save classic GW-BASIC program formats and offers conveniences for today’s systems, such as configurable display and keyboard settings. PC-BASIC is well suited for software preservation, education, and running legacy hobby or business programs that depend on GW-BASIC compatibility.
PC-BASIC is developed by Rob Hagemans. The most popular version of this product among our users is 2.0. The names of program executable files are pcbasic.exe, pcbasicw.exe.
